Dave Brubeck ’42 Remembered with Special EventsSpecial Concert, Library Exhibit to Honor Brubeck’s Life
Two special events are being held on the Stockton campus of University of the Pacific this week in honor of jazz icon Dave Brubeck. Brubeck, who graduated from Pacific in 1942 and went on to become one of the most popular and successful musicians of all time, died Wednesday morning at the age of 91.
On Thursday the Brubeck Institute presents "Remember Dave Brubeck: A Community Gathering in Honor of Dave Brubeck." The free community event takes place at 6 p.m. in Faye Spanos Concert Hall. University President Pamela A. Eibeck, Executive Director of the Brubeck Institute Simon Rowe, Conservatory of Music Dean Giulio Ongaro and Stockton Symphony Music Director Peter Jaffe will offer short personal remarks in conjunction with a short musical performance by the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet (BJIQ). Books with blank pages will be available for members of the community to write short personal messages about Brubeck or condolences to his family.
Following Thursday's community remembrance event, there will be a jazz concert at the Take 5 Jazz at the Brew club, in the Valley Brew Pub at 157 West Adams Street along the Miracle Mile. The Patrick Langham Group and members of the BIJQ will perform in honor of Brubeck. The performance should begin approximately 7:30 pm. Admission to the Take 5 club will be free for this event.
For the next two weeks, a special exhibit of items from the Brubeck Collection that represent the jazz musician's life will be on display in the William Knox-Holt Memorial Library. Titled "The Times of Dave Brubeck," the exhibit focuses on Brubeck's contributions to jazz and classical music and his efforts to promote civil rights and international diplomacy. The exhibit will be on view the week of Dec. 10 and the week of Dec. 17 (Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.). The library will be closed on weekends for the month of December, as students are currently in finals and are expected to head home by the end of the week.
