While Oversees, they asked me...

There is no simple answer to the question: Why study abroad?  In fact, Pacific students who studied abroad during Fall 2002 were asked many additional questions that had no simple answers, including:

  • Why do American girls dance like sluts on the dance floor?

  • Do Americans say "yes" to everything?

  • How big is the city of California?

  • Is George Bush trying to start World War III?

  • Tell us about the Ku Klux Klan.

  • Do you have a girlfriend?

  • Why are you here?

  • Why don't Americans eat vegetables and why do they always eat fast food?

  • What do you think of our country?

  • Are all Californians healthnut/treehuggers?

  • Are all Americans workaholics?

  • Why is it that after a brief conversation Americans think you are their best buddy?

  • Why don't most American's have any appreciation of "good" food?

  • Is America like what we see on TV and the movies?

  • Do you think your people kill each other because of the right to have guns?

  • Why does George Bush feel like he needs to control the world?

  • Why are most Americans ignorant about world issues?

  • Why are you Americans always in such a rush?

  • Why did you decide to move so far away from your family?

  • Why are most Americans only taught one language?

  • Why is it necessary to spread your capitalist culture and increase globalization?

  • Why do you move out of your family's home at such an early age?

  • What was Sept 11 like?

  • Are all Americans like those on Jerry Springer and Ricky Lake?

  • Why did you elect Bush?

  • Why do you believe your society is classless, especially since it has one of the largest differences between the rich and the poor?

  • Why are Americans so focused on merit when its obviously not the most important criterion for getting into college or a good job?

  • Why do Americans know so little about the world?

  • Why are Americans so serious about their religion?

  • How much does your education cost?

  • How many cars does your family own?

  • What do you know about my country?

  • What do you think about your government?

  • America is like the matrix, everybody is just a little robot.  Why are they so greedy?

  • Is it dangerous in the USA?  Are you scared of terrorist attacks?

  • Why are Americans so damned loud?

  • What is it like to be rich?

  • How much cleaner is the US?

  • Why do you have the right to have guns?

  • Are all Americans overweight?

  • Is California more liberal than other states?

  • How big is California compared to my country?

  • What do you really think of us?

  • How did Sept 11 affect people?

  • What do you guys eat?

  • Do you really not have to take math and science in school?

  • Do all Americans wear jeans?

  • Is there a McDonald's on every corner in the US?

  • Why don't you vote?

  • Do you have an American flag?  All Americans have flags!

  • Do you go surfing all the time?

  • What are doughnuts?

  • How much TV do you watch every day and have many TVs do you have at home?

  • What is AIDS like in the US?

  • Why are Americans so fake?

  • Why do Americans always travel in groups?

  • Why aren't you a mother?  Are you missing organs?

  • What is it like to have so much money?

  • Doesn't your family love you--why do they send you to another country?

  • Why do you call your country a democracy when it is a republic?

  • Are Americans always on time?
