Study Abroad Program Details

  • Preparing for Study Abroad - Pacific students wishing to study abroad must apply through International Programs and Services (IPS), located in the Bechtel International Center. The application process begins with our Planning Meeting, an informative meeting that describes Pacific Abroad. Students must also make sure they are eligible for their programs, based on GPA, language ability and other such requirements. Students must also obtain approval from their faculty advisors before any application materials will be issued.

    • Planning Meetings - At these meetings, the Study Abroad Advisor will present students with all the information they need to know about how study abroad works at Pacific. Program requirements, Pacific requirements, financial aid, cost, and other details specific to Pacific study abroad will be discussed. At the meeting students will be given forms to complete with their faculty advisors. Students can sign up for planning meetings by calling the Study Abroad office or visiting the Bechtel International Center. Meetings last about 30-45 minutes.

    • Requirements - In order to be eligible for study abroad, students must fulfill IPS requirements in addition to specific program requirements. Individual program requirements vary depending on the site, school or focus. For further information on specific program requirements, visit the International Resource Library, located in the Study Abroad office.

    • Pacific Requirements -

      • Sophomore standing or above

      • Minimum 2.75 GPA

      • Minimum of one-year residency at Pacific

      • Completion of all fundamental skills requirements

      • Good Academic Standing

      • Approval from the Study Abroad Advisor

      • Successful completion of INTL 151 "Cross-Cultural Training I"

      • Cross-Cultural Student Guide and Workbook

    • Faculty Advisor Approval - If a student fulfills all program requirements, they must then obtain approval from their faculty advisor. We require faculty advisor signatures to assure that students will not get off-track for graduation by spending time abroad. Students should choose their program before obtaining approval from their advisors. Students should also select several courses and alternatives they wish to take abroad, obtaining signatures from their advisors that the courses will fulfill Pacific degree requirements. After approval is granted by the Study Abroad Advisor, students can begin the Application Process.

    • Cross-Cultural Training I - This course is a two-unit course designed to prepare students - American or international -- for study and life abroad. Topics include American values and assumptions, cross-cultural communication, cross-cultural adjustment and problems, and research on the host country. This course is a requirement for all students participating on semester or year programs. Students must take and pass this course to be eligible for study abroad. The class meets for three hours, once a week. The class is only eight weeks long, beginning about the fourth week of the semester and ending a few weeks before finals begin. Because of its abbreviated length and intense curriculum, attendance at all eight classes is mandatory.

    • Workbook and Study Guide - Completion of the Workbook is another requirement for study abroad at Pacific. Before the Study Abroad office will approve your registration for overseas studies, this workbook must be completed. The workbook aims to alert students to the seriousness of study abroad and the realities often overlooked when planning a sojourn overseas. The workbook is comprised of detailed questions that pertain to a semester abroad. Topics covered include health issues, safety and legal concerns, immigration regulations, knowledge of the host country, political issues, financial issues, housing and meals, etc. Students are expected to research each question extensively. The Workbook should be taken with the students when they travel overseas and accessed when necessary.
