Core Philosophy and Program

All Universities have international courses, and most have international majors of one sort or another. However, there are only six nationally ranked universities with professional undergraduate schools of international studies in the U.S. The School of International Studies at Pacific is the most distinctive.

The School of International Studies at the University of the Pacific is

  • one of only six undergraduate schools of international studies in the United States,

  • and the only one on the West Coast,

  • the only one that requires a semester of study abroad and has an integrated program of cross-cultural training to prepare students before and after their study abroad experience,

  • the only school with a team-taught, interdisciplinary curriculum.

What difference does a "school" make?

It is a matter of focus. All of the School of International Studies faculty have committed themselves to international education, and so have all the students. All the faculty have lived and studied abroad and all recognize the extraordinary importance of understanding the whole world, for life and for a career in the next century. Two of these people, both a professor and a student, will serve as your advisers at School of International Studies. At School of International Studies, you are not just a student with unusual interests; you are part of a self-selecting international community of people sharing their passion and experiences, preparing for global careers.
