School of International Studies AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES CAREERS

There are a lot of good reasons for going to college, but most students and their families see it as the foundation for their international studies careers.

Let's talk about the reality of job prospects and the School of International Studies record.

It is the goal of the School of International Studies to have you graduate from this institution with the skills which will enable you to enter the workforce and begin to build the international career of your choosing, and to advance in your career after that first placement.

Here is what you need to know right now.  Now is when your career begins

JOBS AND INTERNATIONAL CAREERS IN THE 21ST CENTURY

All research tells us this: no matter what field you enter, in all likelihood you will not work for one company for the rest of your life, or even in one field.  In the 21st century, most college graduates will not only have many different jobs in their lifetimes, but many different careers as well. The experiences of our School of International Studies graduates bear this out.

Many of the  jobs you might be offered haven't even been created yet because the world is changing so rapidly.  Just think of the Internet--how many people were making a living on the World Wide Web even ten ago?

In the international world, things are changing just as rapidly as they are in high-tech industries, and we want to be sure you can take advantage of those changes.

INTERNATIONAL CAREERS

Perhaps you know exactly what you would like to do for the rest of your life.  What we find, however, is that most students who enter School of International Studies have yet to make that determination.  Most are unaware of the vast array of possibilities open to them..

All indications are that the number of jobs is growing faster in the international field than in most others.  We have only to look at the globalization of American corporations and the economy to understand why.

School of International Studies and Pacific’s Career Resource Center will provide you with the information you need to begin to make your own plans, better informed about your many options.  In addition to advising and to yearly briefings and workshops on career planning, we assist you with internships here and abroad, internships which enable you to explore real jobs in the real world.

For example, we have placed our students in internships in the Office of the United States Trade Representative, the European Parliament, the United States Information Agency, the United Nations, the World Health Organization, in Zero Population Growth, the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the US Department of Commerce, the UN Development Program, the US Agency for International Development (USAID )the Embassy of Finland, and in private industry ranging from accounting and public relations firms to travel agencies and film companies.

WHAT School of International Studies DOES TO PREPARE YOU FOR THESE CAREERS

The School offers you four majors from which to choose:  Global Economic Relations, International Relations, International and Regional Studies, and International Environmental Policy.  In addition, with the advice and support of the faculty, you can design your own major if that better suits your needs.

Our core program emphasizes direct international experience (since we require study abroad in one of our 200 programs in 70 countries), foreign language competency, skills in cross-cultural communication and research, knowledge of economics and politics, and of world history and geography.

We emphasize the development of writing skills and the ability to make oral arguments and public presentations.  In all our majors, we foster the ability to analyze international phenomena and complex cross-cultural situations.

School of International Studies graduates leave us with the sorts of skills which make them not only attractive prospects for entry level jobs, but also having attained the general competencies necessary for future career moves.
